Svetlana Shmulyian and the Delancey Five have been earning rave reviews from premier NYC jazz clubs to the underground world of subway and secret speakeasy parties. They have been called “very sweet & naughty” (Jazzlives), “energetic” (Wall Street Journal), “delightful” (WRHU Jazz Radio), and a cinematically handsome Golden Age-inspired sextet. Rocking hard swinging 20s-40s jazz standards as well as charismatic originals, and featuring Svetlana’s sultry “made for jazz” (streetcredmusic) vocals backed by the band members’ inspired harmonizing and virtuoso instrumentals – their tunes are so infectious, they’ll sweep you off your feet and steal your heart away.

Led by energetic vocalist Svetlana Shmulyian, the quintet co-stars Adrian Cunningham on clarinet and tenor (shining on “Lester Leaps In”) while Dalton Ridenhour piano work ensures that the group splits the difference between Fat Waller’s Rhythm and Counts Basie’s Kansas City Five” (Will Friedwald, Wall Street Journal, 9.15.12) and also features “the native guitar wizard” (JazzLive) Ted Gottsegen, Rob Garcia, “…one of New York’s great jazz drummers and composers.” (Capital New York) and “a prime mover in the current Brooklyn jazz scene…” (Time Out-New York) and powerful and in-demand New York City bassist Brandi Disterheft (“She has the same lope or rhythmical pulse as my late bass player, Ray Brown. She is what we call serious.” – Oscar Peterson). Listen to Baby It’s Cold Outside!

Cocktail Menu For Christmas Party

cocktails

Flute was a real speakeasy in the 1920s. The cocktail is important to Wit’s End parties.

Wit’s End fans know that cocktails are a big part of our parties. Each month, Mr. Don Spiro chooses the most delicious mixes for our special menu. For our first-ever Christmas party, we are adding some new ones that have never been on the menu before, alongside our monthly favorites. This is what is being served Monday, Dec. 3, at Flute Midtown.

First, try a glass of traditional Holiday Punch. But this batch is made with spiced rum, apple cider and ginger beer! If brandy is your winter warmer, go with a Metropolitan, practically a brandy Manhattan. It has brandy, vermouth and aromatic bitters. This drink dates to 1884 and isn’t to be confused with any modern recipes that that share its name.

And what about our friends, Scotch and Whiskey? Order a Rob Roy, with Scotch, Sweet Vermouth and bitters (did you know it was invented at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1894?). The Ward Eight, created in 1898, was named by Esquire as one of the ten best cocktails in 1934. It’s made with blended whiskey, orange juice, lemon juice and grenadine. Our second brandy cocktail is the Three Miler, which is brandy, rum, lemon juice and grenadine. It gets its name from the three-mile offshore limit where bootleggers brought in their illegal hooch during Prohibition.

And of course there are our two monthly favorites:

    • The Wit’s End (Gin, Cointreau, bitters) created for us by Jeremy James Thompson, former head bartender at the Raines Law Room.
    • French 75 (Champagne, gin, lemon juice, sugar). This is a specialty at Flute, the top Champagne bar in the city (and French owned). The French 75 is named for the 75mm artillery shells of World War I. American Doughboys loved the drink and brought it home with them after the war.

All year long we have fantastic cocktails mixed up by our friends at Flute. For our 1922 Office Christmas Party we will be celebrating the season in style!

Doors open at 7. Free dance lesson at 8 from Jeri Lynn & Neal. Then the Red Hook Ramblers go on with their New Orleans style jazz. Tickets are just $10 at the door or online via TicketWeb.

Table reservations are available and encouraged; telephone Flute Midtown reservation line at 212.265.5169 to reserve a table.
